A heartfelt tribute to Sudhakantha, Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika on his birth centenary.
Across Assam and India, numerous governmental and non-governmental organisations are orchestrating events through music, dance, painting, and various art forms to honour and remember Sudhakantha. Yet, it is perhaps only ‘Gandharba’, a non-professional theatre group from Guwahati, that is offering a dramatic homage through the powerful medium of theatre, embracing the legendary artist’s vibrant life and vast body of work. In Maligaon’s Boripara, the acting and music academy ‘Gandharba’, graced the Karmashree Hiteswar Saikia Auditorium this December with their third annual theatre festival. They unveiled ‘Moi Aru Mur Saa’ (Me and My Shadow), a play woven from the vibrant tapestry of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s life, earning the heartfelt acclaim of a diverse audience, transcending linguistic boundaries. The theatrical evening, graced by the presence of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s family and members of the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Cultural Trust, was hailed by the discerning audience as one of the finest tributes in the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika birth centenary celebrations, with resounding calls for its staging at both state and national levels. Dhrubajyoti Kumar, the editor of ‘Gandharba’, has informed the media that ‘Moi Aru Mur Saa’ has been invited to perform at the Bharat Rang Mahotsav (BRM), India’s largest international theatre festival organised by the National School of Drama (NSD), Delhi.
The editor reveals that NSD has announced the staging of the play on February 3rd, 2026, at the Purbashree Auditorium of EZCC, Park Street, Kolkata—a prominent hub for Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s musical pursuits, filmmaking, literature, journalism, and other creative explorations. The ‘Gandharba’ team, along with the editor, expresses profound gratitude to the National School of Drama, Delhi, for bestowing upon them the rare honour of paying a theatrical tribute to Dr. Bhupen Hazarika in Kolkata, during his birth centenary celebrations.
