Assam-Born Actor Rajdeep Choudhury Wins Hearts with Nuanced Act in Waves OTT’s Simulacra
Noted film critic, Prantik Deka writes on Rajdeep Choudhury
In a genre often dominated by flashing lights and loud spectacles, Rajdeep Choudhury uses silence instead of loud displays to make a strong impact. The Assam-born storyteller brings a beautifully restrained, European sensibility to his character, Rajneesh, in the new sci-fi thriller Simulacra, which is now streaming free on Waves OTT. Like the final pieces of a puzzle, his presence slowly binds the entire narrative together. In a futuristic world where advanced technology can edit, control, and erase human memories, Simulacra explores the depths of the human mind. Produced by Shrikant Kadam and Pravin Pingat under the banner of Philosia Films, and directed by Pankaj Sawant, the film centers on Rajneesh (played by Rajdeep), a character deeply inspired by the profound teachings and worldview of the spiritual teacher and guru Osho.
In a world dominated by AI, neural chips, and digital control, Rajneesh stands apart. By refusing to surrender to technology, he champions the power of human consciousness, self-awareness, and genuine connection, becoming the film’s moral and emotional anchor.
Rajdeep’s portrayal is subtle, restrained, and deeply layered. Rather than relying on dramatic dialogue or exaggerated gestures, he uses silence, expression, and reaction to reveal his character’s inner world, bringing a distinctly British style of understated screen acting to the film. Appearing from beginning to end, his presence gradually connects the narrative like the final pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.
Rajdeep’s journey to Simulacra serves as a moving reminder of how deeply relationships anchor the film industry. The role was initially slated for Tarun Gahlot, but when another project made him unavailable, he recommended his close friend and fellow FTII alumnus. Trusting that recommendation, Mumbai casting director Rohan Mapuskar brought Rajdeep on board, transforming a scheduling conflict into a breakthrough opportunity born entirely of mutual trust.
“This film reminded me that relationships are everything in our industry. Your work matters, but the people who believe in you matter just as much. If my friend Tarun hadn’t trusted me as both an actor and a person, he wouldn't have recommended me for this role. I’m incredibly grateful to Tarun and Rohan for putting their faith in me,” Rajdeep said.
Rajdeep’s co-stars include Akshara Haasan and acclaimed actor Satyajeet Dubey. One of Rajdeep’s biggest takeaways from Simulacra was the friendships he built. He formed a close bond with Akshara Haasan during filming, and their friendship has lasted long after production wrapped.
“The best part of working on Simulacra was the lasting friendships. Akshara has become a truly close friend, and it is wonderful when a co-star stays in your life long after the project ends. Satyajeet and I also catch up often. Whenever we meet, we naturally dive into deep, inspiring conversations about filmmaking and acting. It is a real privilege to collaborate with talented people and leave the set with bonds that outlast the cameras.”
Rajdeep’s directing debut, Chalo India with Eric Ji: Varanasi, was showcased at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. Following this success, his second documentary, Chalo India with Eric Ji: Mizoram, screened at London's prestigious, Oscar-qualifying Raindance Film Festival. Later this year, he will star in the lead role of the British feature film A Teacher’s Gift.
“I hope everyone watches Simulacra,” actor Rajdeep Choudhury shares. “It is a film that questions where humanity is headed in a tech-driven world. Playing Rajneesh has been a career highlight, and I hope viewers truly connect with both the character and the message.”
The sci-fi thriller Simulacra is now available to stream for free on Waves OTT.
