GAFF 2026: highlighting the remarkable accomplishments of Indian and regional cinema
Film critic Prantik Deka reports
At the conclusion of the event, the Best Film Award was bestowed upon the Malayalam film ‘Victoria’. This directorial effort by Sivaranjini was recognised for its profoundly engaging storyline and its sophisticated visual aesthetic. The film depicts a single day in the life of its titular protagonist, who is convinced by a friend to bring a rooster to her workplace. This bird, intended for sacrifice in a church, represents the only male presence in a predominantly female environment. Adding to its accolades, the film saw its cinematographer, Anand Ravi, honoured with a Jury Special Mention at GAFF for his truly remarkable work behind the camera.
The Nepali film ‘Shape of Momo’, directed by debutant Tribeny Rai, has been honoured with the Second Best Film Award. The film powerfully depicts a woman’s struggle against patriarchal norms to create her own destiny, offering a moving look at identity and freedom in a traditional setting. The recognition celebrates its compelling storytelling and its refreshingly original vision.
The NE Spotlight Award, which shines a light on regional cinema from the Northeast, was bestowed upon the Assamese film ‘Noi Kotha’ (River Tales), helmed by Pankaj Borah. The film depicts an indigenous community displaced by political and economic upheaval, examining how modernisation and policies disrupt their traditional way of life and sever connections to their heritage. The Jury and audience members were deeply moved by its profound cultural impact and engaging narrative.
“The Indian Showcase Awards truly capture the essence of GAFF,” Monita Borgohain, Honorary Festival Director of GAFF, shared. “It's all about honouring courageous stories, the richness of our diverse regions, and films that truly touch our hearts. This year’s awardees beautifully illustrate how compelling tales can blossom from unique cultural backgrounds, yet still speak to us all on a universal level. We are thrilled to offer a platform where these incredible voices can be discovered, celebrated, and nurtured.”
At the GAFF 2026, the renowned filmmaker Girish Kasaravalli took the lead as the chair of the jury for the Indian Showcase Competition. Accompanying him were the notable film industry figures Utpal Borpujari and Anupama Bose, each bringing their unique expertise to the panel.
The awards prominently highlight GAFF’s dedication to fostering a rich variety of voices from both India and Asia. By doing so, they provide an invaluable platform for emerging and independent filmmakers.
The Guwahati Asian Film Festival (GAFF) 2026 proudly bestowed its prestigious Lifetime Achievement Honour upon the legendary actor Bishnu Kharghoria, in acknowledgment of his remarkable impact on the world of Indian cinema. Instituted as an annual honour, this award shines a spotlight on artistes whose illustrious body of work has profoundly influenced cinematic culture.
The second edition of the Guwahati Asian Film Festival, which took place under the auspices of Trending Now Media, was conducted with the backing of the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Government of India. The festival featured a selection of 26 carefully chosen films representing 10 different Asian nations, generating significant involvement from directors, film enthusiasts, and experts within the film industry.
