Borluit Productions hosted a star-studded premiere of the Assamese feature film "Dipholu" at Matrix Cinemas in Beltola, Guwahati, bringing together luminaries from the state’s cultural and film fraternity ahead of its theatrical release across Assam on October 9.
Directed by Nekib and produced by Jekiv, the film features lead actors Amrita Gogoi and Subrat Deori in a story rooted in the warmth and realities of Assamese village life. The grand gathering united the cast, crew, media representatives, film critics, and prominent figures from Assam’s cultural landscape in a celebratory prelude to its public debut.
For the Dipholu team, the premiere marked the triumphant culmination of a long and challenging journey. Director Nekib shared that the moment brought a mix of relief, excitement, and emotion, as they finally unveiled the film to audiences after overcoming the setback of two previous postponements. “After such a long wait, we are finally here, as Dipholu reaches theatres on October 9,” Nekib shared. "This has been a deeply personal journey for all of us. At its heart, the film celebrates the beauty of simplicity — our people, our relationships, and our everyday lives. I believe every Assamese person will find a reflection of themselves in this story. No matter how far we wander, we remain inextricably connected to our roots. I hope this film transports audiences back to the people and experiences that truly shaped us. I sincerely hope they experience Dipholu in theatres and take this beautiful journey alongside us.”
Dipholu is actually the name of a river that flows through the heart of the Kaziranga National Park. It is against the scenic backdrop of a village nestled on the banks of this very river that the film’s story unfolds. Set against the quiet pulse of the countryside, Dipholu explores the delicate tapestry of human relationships, aspirations and the cultural landscape. It balances humour and heartbreak to reveal the profound beauty of everyday life.
The film chronicles the journey of a young woman named Kuhi (played by Amrita Gogoi), who hails from Guwahati. Materialistic and used to the comforts of city life, her world changes completely when she is posted to a remote riverine village on the banks of the Dipholu River as part of her medical training.
Upon her arrival, Kuhi struggles deeply with the village’s harsh living conditions and the dilapidated healthcare facility. Initially resistant, frustrated, and longing to return to the city, her attitude sparks friction with the locals — particularly with Neel (played by Subrat Deori), a passionate, humble, and idealistic village schoolmaster dedicated to his community.
As the story progresses, their initial ‘clash of worlds’ transitions into a deep emotional bond, evolving into a journey of personal growth and community impact.
Through a series of both humorous and heartfelt interactions, Neel helps Kuhi see the beauty, traditions, and resilience of the rural community. Kuhi undergoes a major personal evolution, transforming from a self-centred dreamer into a grounded, compassionate doctor who actively works to address the core healthcare issues affecting the village. Ultimately, the journey redefines her entire understanding of love, community, and what it truly means to find ‘home’.
For lead actor Subrat Deori, the premiere carries added significance as the film marks his feature-film debut. “There is immense excitement, but I am certainly feeling the pre-release jitters. Being my first film, Dipholu will always remain close to my heart. Working alongside such a talented team and seasoned veteran artistes has been an invaluable learning experience. I am now eager for audiences to experience the film firsthand, and I hope they visit the theatres to share this beautiful journey with us,” he said.
Dipholu marks Borluit Productions’ first feature film, following its acclaimed short films Rong and Akaax Bisari, which have received recognition at international film festivals. The film features Amrita Gogoi, Subrat Deori, Arun Nath, Arun Hazarika, Purnada Hazarika, Rajib Dowari, Jyotishman Bora, Kanika Nath, Anirban Kalita, Ankur Baidya, Dr. Hitesh Baruah, Simashree Borah, Priyanshi Kashyap and Dibyapratim Bhagawati, with Mridula Baruah in a guest appearance.
Music is central to Dipholu, featuring a soundtrack composed by Music Director Jekiv and a background score by Polash Gogoi. The film’s music is brought to life by a lineup of celebrated artistes who hold a special place in Assam’s musical landscape.
Speaking about the music, Jekiv said, “Zubeen da and Gayatri ba blessed our debut film with their voices, and having worked closely on the music, that makes this album incredibly special to me. It is painful to accept that we will never have the opportunity to record their voices again, but we feel truly blessed that they stood with us at the very beginning of our journey. Their voices have become woven into the emotional fabric of Dipholu, and we will cherish their blessing for the rest of our lives.”
The soundtrack includes Xorogi Xopun, featuring Zubeen Garg and Gayatri Hazarika, and Prem Baru, featuring Zubeen Garg and Rupali Kashyap, alongside songs featuring the voices of Rakesh Reeyan and Montumoni Saikia.
For Amrita Gogoi, who plays the lead role, the song Prem Baru carries a deeply emotional significance. “Prem Baru is incredibly special to me because of the voice behind it,” Gogoi shared. “Even after we wrapped up shooting, I felt a strong desire to keep performing, knowing I would never get the chance to perform to Zubeen da’s voice like this again. It was a truly emotional moment, but I am forever grateful for the opportunity.
Zubeen da always reminded us to believe in Assamese cinema — ‘Douri douri jam, Axomiya cinema saam’ (We will run to the theatres to watch Assamese cinema). Those words feel especially meaningful today. I earnestly urge audiences to give Dipholu a chance — come to the theatres, listen to his voice, experience the story, and celebrate Assamese cinema with us.”
Following its star-studded premiere with the Assamese film fraternity, Dipholu heads to theatres on October 9, as the team hopes audiences will connect with its simple, deeply rooted Assamese story.
